Monitoring a wind generator on an EMON II H1A

Postby DerekO on Wed Nov 20, 2013 8:22 am

I have EMON II, ser # H1-560 R.5 A (the “A” is circled). I would like to measure the solar and wind generator output on the “ALT” channel. I also have what I believe is a “Smart Shunt #1107”. (The shunt has 6 wires coming from the bottom. A blue wire is connected to the end of the shunt marked “Negative” and the red wire is connected to the shunt end marked “Neg Distribution”. It also has white, yellow, red and black wires coming from it.)

1.) Please confirm my understanding from the serial number that the circled “A” means this unit is a H1A. (The display options displays B1, B2 and ALT channels.)
2.) Can this shunt be used with this EMON to monitor charging sources? If so, what are the connections to the shunt and the EMON (TB1-4 and 5?)? Will this shunt be installed in the negative or positive side?
3.) Where can I find the technical specs of this shunt?

Thanks, but I'm confused. The HSCS clearly states it has 3 wires and the shunt I have has 6. Is this a different version of the shunt and is the wire colour coding the same? What are the other wires for and do I leave them unterminated? The one I have has 2 red wires. The larger red wire (I’m guessing 20 gauge) has a ring terminal on it and connected to one end of the shunt as mentioned above. Do you have a cct diagram or version change info of the shunts?

Can you post a picture of what you have?

Here are a couple pics of the shunt from the front and bottom. The label on the front identifies it as a “Smart Shunt #1107”. The bottom view shows the identification “APC88627” marked on the PCB. Sorry for the delay. I had to uninstall it to get a good picture.

Download the ZIP file for the R6 version of the EmonII from here: http://www.amplepower.com/wire/index.html

The PDF manual has wiring diagrams.

I have reviewed the wiring diagrams and thoroughly read the manual as you have asked but I cannot find any reference to a #1107 smart shunt. Only standard shunts are used in the diagrams, (#1011 for 200A and #1014 for 400A). The pictures I attached show the shunt I have is labelled as a #1107. It has a standard 50mv@200A shunt (stamped into the brass) and the printed circuit board under it has the letters APC on it so it appears to be an Ample Power shunt. It appears to be similar to the HSCS shunt but with additional wires so it would appear to need to be wired differently than the HSCS. Is it an older version of the HSCS? Can it be used with a H1A, on which side (Pos or Neg) and how should it be wired? I appreciate your help so I don't wire it incorrectly and destroy the EMON.

With the exception of the ALT channel, my boat is wired as in diagram AT9310231 on page 35 of the manual.

Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

I finally found the diagram, dated 1988.

For the small wires:

Red = 12/24V power
Blk = digital ground - negative distribution

Wht = same as Blk, but wire separately to same point on distribtution.

Yel = signal to H1A on the Aux. channel -- wiil change 0-2V for 0-200A current.
