EMON II and assocaited SHUNT

This might end up being a double post, in which case my apologies. Concerning the EMON II and associated shunt:

1) Do the shunts fail and if so what are the sympthoms of that failure?
2) Are there any "polarity" requirments to the shunt, either the acutal load connections or metering connections?
3) Is there a calbrarion requirement between the shunt and EMON II?

If a shunt fails it would most likely be obvious from the metal fragments.

The shunt isn't polarized, but the too small sense wires need to be wired for it to read correctly. Discharge current should register as negative.

The EMON uses shunts that develop 0.05 Volts at 400 Amps.
