Adding Solar Panel to Charging System

Postby decho on Thu Sep 01, 2016 4:00 am

I have an Ample Power Smart Charge Manager #SCM-12
with Power Supply/Charger, 30 Amp 12 Volt #PSC30-12
on my 36 foot sailboat.

How do I add roughly 200 watt solar panel into the system.
Can I use your existing charge controller for both 30 amp charger and solar?
Do I need a separate charge controller for the solar panels?
How do I keep from damaging the existing charge/power system.

I have 4 wet marine house batteries and 1 wet engine battery. I have small
65 Watt refrigeration unit. I think 200 watt solar panels may keep batteries
charged running the fridge with occasionally running the engine.

Thanks,
decho

You can buy a solar controller when you get the panels. As long as you follow their instructions you won't damage anything.

When dockside with the charger operating there my be overcharge warnings from the Smart Charge Manager if the solar panels are also working. As long as the solar controller is regulating properly you can ignore the SCM warnings.
