The diode that got blown up is a diode that can take about 50A of surge current. It didn't blow up until you activated the parallel switch. At that point power was applied to the field driver circuit, apparently with the wrong polarity.

And yes, the processor could be working and flashing the green light until the "parallel event". In fact it could still be working fine because there is a certain amount of isolation between the processor circuit and the field driver.

A very visible warning sticker should be attached to all V3 Regulators. "If upgrading from a Next Regulator to the V3 take note that polarity has been reversed to the Parallel and Lamp terminals otherwise there is a risk of damage to the Regulator and the Engine Ignition Panel".

Not only did the Regulator blow but my Volvo Penta ignition panel electronic unit has to be replaced. Thanks Ample Power!

The above is not true. No damage will be done, things just won't work as expected. Now, if you swap power and ground wires, there will be damage to the regulator and anything else that gets wrong polarity applied, like ignition panels.

Your regulator has been repaired.

Please answer 1 very simple question: Would the green led blink 3 ON and 3 OFF for about 1 hour if the power and ground terminals were reversed?

Alternator field and ground can be reversed and still have normal power to the processor, so in fact the green light would flash.

The 3/3 on/off indicates that the ignition input is off, so the field would not be turned on at that time.
