Equalizing "trips" out

I've just installed my new V3 regulator, I have shorted the two pins of P1, and I have set all the switches correctly for thick plate liquid. When I toggle the switch to equalize, at idle, the status light illuminates for 6 seconds, then goes dark. This only happens for about 30 seconds (I can watch the voltage rise while this happens), then the voltage drops, the alternator shuts off, then returns to float. If the engine is ramped up to around 1800 rpm the same process happens, but in about 3 seconds. Am I missing something? and yes, my batteries are not in the best of shape......

Equalization stops when the voltage reaches the upper setpoint, which it will do almost instantly unless the current limit is set to a low value. Turn the pot all the way CCW to get zero current, and than after starting EQL, turn it up slowly to get the desired Amps.

do you ever have one of those ahhaa moments?! I had my head wrapped around this completly backwards, that would also explain why the engine loads so heavily when the eq cycle starts.
