3 step regulator--model 123

I have an Ample Power regulator and alternator on my sailboat. Works great. I just adjusted the absorption and float voltages to the specs for my AGM batteries and decided it would be nice to try to figure out what to do about a long standing problem.
The regulator causes the tachometer to cut out when it is charging the battery. So the tach is jumping up to the correct rpm when not charging and down to zero when charging. I think this is happening during the absorption and float stages. It is quite irritating. What can I do to eliminate the problem?

I also have the 3-Step Regulator Model 123 with a Ample Alternator Model 4023. Because I was getting only 35 amps (max) from the alternator (it spins at 2500 rpm at cruising speed...I expected closer to 60 amps), I started tweaking the absorption and float charge settings. Now I have it all out of wack and I don't have the operator's manual for the regulator. Do you know it it's on-line? If not, I'd be glad to pay for copying yours and postage. Thanks...Jim
