Hi
I have recently installed a dual alternator controller along side my sarv3
My set up is as follows, the main engine has a amptech 120amp alternator and i have a single dc generator also with an amptech 120 amp alternator
the problem is when i run the main engine the amps going into the batteries is lets say (55) I then shut the engine down and start the dc generator and it only puts in (20) amps
The system has been wired up as per the documentation am i missing something ?
any advice would be appreciated

It could just be a difference in RPM and what the alternators can produce.

If you use the Troubleshooting Guide for both instances and post the results, we can be more definitive.

Thanks Coulomb
The Alternators are identical and rpm is the same on both engines
I have printed off the trouble shooting guide and will post the results

The results
it looks like the field is the problem ?

The regulator is acting as it should. B+ is over 14 Volts and the regulator cuts back the field as it regulates.

If the battery current is low it's because they are charged, or not accepting charge.

My question is
why do they accept charge with alt 1 but not alt 2
when this test was done alt 1 was putting in 16 amps but alt 2 was only putting in 4 amps
and this seems to be the ratio alt 2 puts in about 0.25 that of alt 1 regardless of battery state
same alternator same rpm
Alt 1 is run on its own and then turned off, And then Alt 2.

You're getting them charged and then switching alternators.

Reverse the sequence and see what you get.

I can do this at any stage of the charge cycle
it doe's not matter if i start with alt 2 and then switch to alt 1 or the other way around
If i run alternator No#2 until its putting in less than 2% stop it and then start the alternator No #1 on the main engine it puts in at least 20 amps
indicating batteries are not fully charged.

You're neglecting the fact that when you stop it, the voltage is at float, and when you restart it, it goes to absorption. Of course it will put in more Amps until it switches back to float.
