V3 shuts off alternator

When the batteries in my trawler become fully charged while underway, the V3 shuts off the alternator. This occurs erratically. If I shut down and restart the engine the alternator comes back on line. Turning on a load, like the overhead lights, does not solve the problem. Any suggestions as to how I can solve the problem?

This sounds like the transition to float. Have you read this information? http://www.amplepower.com/primer/tach/index.html

What does the volt meter display when this happens?

The reference gives a good explanation and I will check to see if my Perkins diesel has a plug for a RPM sensor. The voltage is over 14 volts when the alternator is shut off.
Thanks for the help.

The 14V indicates that the alternator is maintaining battery voltage, but the alternator is producing so little current that the tach signal is too weak.
