SARV-3 high bulk charge voltage

Ambient temp of 30F resulted in 17.6vdc bulk charge for 30 min +/- the system is new, SARV-3, DAC with 2 Penntex PX2 200A alternators charging port and starboard start batteries combined to two house batteries, all 4d (total 24 cells)
The SARV is set for East Penn Gel. Where is the best place for the Temp sensor? (on house bank now) When warmed up all was well

17.6 is too high under any circumstances!!!! Do you have a 1-2-both switch in the system?

Best place for temp sensor is on the positive post of the battery that connects to the alternator.

There is a 1-2 both In the system and also an emergency parallel. Are you suggesting that the 1-2 b switch may be causing the high volts?

We've campaigned against 1-2 both switches for almost 20 years now.

First, read this: http://www.amplepower.com/primer/burnt_sw/index.html. There is not a 1-2-both switch on the market that will survive long at 100+ Amps.
And yes, we can read the specs printed in the plastic on the back of the switches. Hooey!

But, your immediate problem was caused because the regulator is sensing one battery, and you were directing current to a different battery. The regulator saw the voltage on the battery not being charged and kept feeding the field trying to get that voltage to rise.

You didn't suffer thermal run away and meltdown of the batteries -- this time. Maybe next time you won't be so lucky. Get rid of the 1-2-both switch so that human error can't happen again!

Following the wiring diagram for the regulator and wire the alternator directly to the batteries.
