Switching out 2002 next step regulator for 2013 vr3

My boat is in the Nassau and I am getting two new deka 4d AGM atteries and my balmar alternator is strong. Is there any point to install a new more modern regulator, like the VR3 if price is no object? I always wondered if the absorption charge time for my batteries was correct on the next step life line,2002 , I have on my boat now. It seems like the newer regulator sets this with a switch. If I do switch a new one in, will it fit in the same place? Will the old wires to the unit work and fit with the newer model? Will I need to add any new wires? Thank you for your input.

The SAR V3 is larger than the Next Step. The Next Step allows you to set the absorption time. The SAR V3 sets it based on the battery type and some measured parameters.

You would use the same basic wires, but the SAR V3 has more options, and those options require more wires.

If it's not broken, don't fix it. As long as it's dry, it should continue to give good service.
