Effect of external charging source (solar) on v3

Postby Ripple on Tue Feb 04, 2014 10:07 am

Motoring behind shadow of island mountains in early morning and the alternator controlled by the V3 regulator is charging. When exiting the shadow and sun hits the solar panels (they are controlled by their own regulator), the engine rpm's noticeably increases, indicating that the alternator has stopped charging. Can another charging source affect the output of the alternator? I have been thinking of turning off the solar charging when the engine is running. Good, indifferent, or bad idea?

If the V3 sees that the batteries are being charged by another source, (solar panels, charger off genset), then it will back off.

Letting the solar panel do the work could save some small amount of fuel???
