Parallel Solenoid

I have just installed a var V3 system purchased about 4 months ago in the USA (the boat is with us in Malaysia). The parallel solenoid becomes very hot. I disconnected the high capacity wires and operated it without passing battery current through but it still got very hot. The terminals on the solenoid are not labelled positive and negative so I assume it makes no difference. The current put out by the V3 is 2.6 amps at 12 volts and the manual says it should be no more than 1.5 amps. What can I do to fix this issue?

Is the solenoid from Ample Power?

If not you may have one which is not rated for continuous duty.

Yes, it was supplied with the regulator. It is a Cole Hersee solenoid type 24059 supposed to be for continuous duty but it gets far too hot to touch and its mounted on a wooden bulkhead. I am not game to use it for continuous charge.

That's the correct part number for the 12V, 100A unit.

Coil resistance is about 17 Ohms, so there is about 13W power dissipated. It will get pretty warm.

Check out your coil resistance.

17.4 ohms but it still gets too hot. I checked a few blogs and apparently it is quite common for these solenoids to run hot. Some blogs say they work well for on and off type work but there are reports of serious over heating for continuous duty. There are several reviews on Amazon alone. One says it got too hot so he connected it to a battery for 2 hours straight and now its not too hot. I would be interested in the rationale behind that! It sells for $8.76.

It will run hot with 13 Watts in the coil.

What do you suggest I do? Our house batteries are four 6 volt T 105s, not Trojan but supposed to be the same. They are made by 3K, we bought them in Thailand last year. Our engine battery is a regular 12 volt liquid. I have the SAR V3 Battery type selection set for "Medium Plate Liquid". I would appreciate your thoughts.

Since we're not familiar with the batteries, we can't really make recommendations.

The best approach is to monitor battery current during the charge process to see when, (if), the batteries are reaching full.
