SAR V3 Red Error LED on Steady

Postby Salty_Doug on Thu Oct 22, 2009 2:52 pm

Hi,
I just installed the SAR V3 and the Red LED stays on all the time. It does not flash. The Green flashes 3s on & 3s off. No charge comes out of the alternator and the Field output from the regulator goes to 0.0 as soon as the engine starts. The Engine start battery is separated from the house bank by a Balmar Duo-Charge. The regulator and alternator are connected directly to the house batteries. The house batteries are brand new Lifeline Golf cart batteries in a series-parallel arrangement to give 12V at 660AH capacity. The Engine is a 2004 Yanmar 3JH4TE and the alternator is an Ample Power #1024 150 amp unit.

Here are my measurements:

DC Resistance of the field is 22 ohms.

First, disconnect the wire for the error lamp on TB-12 to make sure that something external to the regulator is not driving the red led.

Something is presently charging the house battery. The regulator will turn off the field if the battery voltage is higher than expected -- about 13 when first turned on.

Hi Coulomb,
That worked! Thanks.
The Yanmar Instrument panel wants a sink to ground on error. I disconnected the wire to the instrument panel and the red LED is now out.

I also turned off the solar panels and let the batteries come down to 12.5 and when I started the engine, voila, charging current!

Thanks again!

The SAR V3 flashes a voltage runaway code when something else is charging higher than it's setpoint, but with the LED locked on, ----
