I have s/n N14701 which has served well for about 8 years, and now will not charge.
Symptom: error (red) light on 3 seconds, off 1 second, saying no batt sense voltage, yet it's there on the pins.
Measurements per troubleshooting guide are:
ign off / ign on eng running
parallell 0/.02/.02
on/off 0/12.47/12.47
ground 0/0/0
B+ 12.6/12.6/12.5
field 4.99/5.48/.01
alt gnd 0/0/0
lock 0/0/0
bat volts 21.64/12.6/12.6
t- 0/0/0
t+ .12/2.86/2.86
abs 0/0/0
lamp 0/.15/.15
Obviously, alternator is not charging when running due to no field voltage. But interestingly, upon first starting
the engine, since the field has some voltage on it ( and actually goes up to 12v for a moment) alternator puts out
full charge pegging meters for a few seconds, after which the regulator removes field and shuts down alternator
charge. From all above and reading other posts it appears regulator has a problem. Do you agree and should I send
in for repair? Any other advice?
If I send it in for repair, is Ample still at 6315 Seaview ave, Seattle? Any estimate on turnaround? Cost of new vs repair?
Thanks, you guys have always been great in supporting us.
