2-engine wiring with one alternator removed

Postby Thoy on Thu Jul 28, 2016 8:57 am

I have a Next-12P from the early 90's running 2 alternators from separate engines. One alternator has a bearing failure, is locked up, and I can't get it repaired for a week or so as I am underway. I can get a new small alternator to put on to keep the belt the belt tight so the water-pump will run. My plan is not to have the new alternator wired up till the old unit is repaired. What do I need to do with the existing wiring?

Thanks,
Terry

Your plan sounds OK. Just protect the field wire to the bad alternator so it doesn't short to ground.

Just to verify, I'll have all wires disconnected

No, just disconnect the wire at the field of the bad alternator and protect it from shorting to ground or alternator output, i.e, tape is up.
