Bat. Volts Disconnected

I have a Next Step 12P 12V Rtype Regulator on my sailing vessel. While operating under power recently (running at about 24000 rpms), I detected the "3 second on and 1 second off" Red Error Indicator. I am not sure what would be the cause and am enough of an electronics rube to not understand the implications of "Bat. Volts Disconnected." By way of background, since last summer, the house batteries have never charged beyond 12.75V (previously they had attained 13+). The house battery bank consists of 3 200 amp AGM batteries that are maintained by a Yanmar engine alternator and a 200 amp large frame alternator. The boat is kept on a mooring so the AC inverter/charger is not used to maintain the batteries. There is a Link 1000 monitoring system installed. Thanks for your help. Alec

The regulator has to sense battery voltage before it can charge the batteries. If there is no voltage on the battery sense input then the regulator will not activate the field of the alternator.

Re: my question about the error indicator alert for Bat. Volts Disconnected, do you have any troubleshooting recommendations for me to address the error alert. I guess that checking the leads to the regulator would be appropriate--anything else that you would suggest. (I assume that the regulator generally senses battery temperature since the error alert has only activated twice, once last fall and then a few days ago.)

You may have an intermittent fuse, if it's wired according to the diagram.

Check for even a small amount of corrosion.

Hello from British Columbia;

I have the same Bat. Volts Disconnected error with the red LED 3 seconds on and 1 off plus the green LED is on for 2 seconds and one second off (Bulk Charge. What does that mean? Good or bad?). The one difference is that mine is a full time error not intermitent. When I start the engine it charges at around 14 VDC just long enough for me to see it on the minitor in the cabin. After that, the charge drops to battery voltage which is slowly dropping, now at 12.3 VDC. I've checked the fuses which are good. I'm assuming that the Bat volts really aren't getting to the Next Step or the unit is faulty and not able to sense the voltage.

Unfortunately our marina does not have shore power to charge the batteries on the AC charger which works fine.

I'd really appreciate any insight anyone might have on this. I don't know what my "next step" in troubleshooting this bug should be..............................

The regulator is not lying. As your measurements confirm, there is no battery voltage present at terminal 9.
