Bad regulator replaced, Generator output low

I replaced the next step regulator which was defective and I know have good field output, however the generator produces high output for only a few minutes and then goes from 80 amps down to 2 amps within a few minutes. The regulator status shows bulk load and the field voltage is 12.5 volts. I removed the field wire from the generator and shorted 12 volts to the field terminal and the output showed the same symptoms. Changing the rpm of the engine does not change the output. The belt is not slipping, the connections to the generator were remove and cleaned. There is not voltage drop between the battery and the generator and the grounding is as it should be. I filled in the form asking for voltage measurements across the regulator terminals with ignition off, ignition on, and engine running. All measurements were compared to the second section on the form and were found to be the same. I purchased the generator from Ample Power in 2002. It is a 'P' type generator.
I have run out of ideas in what to check next so as to isolate the problem. Any thoughts?

It sounds like a bad alternator. It needs to be tested.
