How to connect those cables?

Postby Tenai on Tue Dec 27, 2011 3:30 pm

Hi all;

I recently bought one "old" model; in it there are 5 connector and not 4 as usual; see: http://dc466.4shared.com/img/_ehSbX1a/s7/DSC04393.JPG

How to connect them to my Yanmar panel and next-step regulator?

Thank you

That's not an Ample Power Alternator. The R terminal could stand for Regulator, or RPM, i.e. tach signal.

You can measure the R terminal to ground. It it's field, then the should be 6-20 Ohms resistance. You may have to spin the alternator a little to break through oil film on the brushes.

If it looks like the field, (regulator hookup), mount the unit, hook up battery plus and minue, run it and momentarily touch the R wire to battery positive. It should charge.

I bought it for Ample; this is the auction's link: http://www.ebay.it/itm/130589993988?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

As you can see below it seems to be a Ample Power, model 5023-S (or 5003-S, is not clear) RR365 124/106Ampere:

Does it change anything?

Thank you

Yes, it does. That's an N type alternator - very few were ever sold.

This alternator charges when the field is connected to ground.

I'll see if there's any documentation I can find from the stone ages.

I have recently found this forum and after reading all that i could have found 1 reference to an alternator which is the same as mine. It is a 5023-S and was purchased and fitted to the boat in Feb 1996 (by a previous owner). It is coupled with a next step regulator and a Enegy Monitor11-H1. I have very little info on this alternator and would like to get anything you have on it. Secondly are there service kits available for it? such as are available for the 4023. The unit still works reasonably well and is mounted on a Cummins 4B motor.
Thanks for your time

See the N-type Next Step Regulator from this URL: http://www.amplepower.com/wire/index.html
