Simple regulator for 4023

Hi,
I have a 23' Anderson boat, 350 engine with a dead Leece-Neville 51 amp alternator w/internal regulator and dual batteries. I just picked up a 4023 Alternator w/out regulator. I'm wondering if I can attach an off the shelf internal regulator to the back of this 4023 alternator to replace my Leece-Neville alternator. I understand a smart regulator is much more advanced a system, but I am on dime at the moment and reviewing my options.

Thanks,

Most standard automotive regulators won't be able to handle the field current of the alternato.
