Tachometer needle readings

Postby jwarren on Wed Mar 30, 2016 7:40 am

After using Ample Power products for years with much success I have a question regarding the tachometer needle jumping from 600 RPM idle to 2,500 RPMs and vise versa regardless of what the engine is actually doing. I have recently replaced one Ample Power alternator for another due to the housing wearing out. This is small frame alternator. I think it has something to do with the alternator wire on the back of the alternator, but I have plugged and unplugged it several times to make sure it has a good connection. Could this situation be caused by the alternator or by the regulator? It has worked perfectly for 20 years and now it's acting up. Any suggestions as to what to do next or what might be causing this to happen?
