Purpose of Shunt in Smart Charge Manager

What is the purpose of the shunt in the Smart charge manager? I see in the description this shunt is optional. As I understand it, the Voltage settings and probably absorption times are set with the DIP switches. Current limiting is also set with DIP switches. The SCM has no display so it cannot display what the shunt is measuring. Can you please explain this shunt?
I currently have 2 x 12 Volts 55 Amps units with a SCM with the SCMs shunt, coupled to an EMON with its own shunt and SARV3 controlling 2 alternators on separate engines, and all works fine, just wondering...
Thanks

The shunt is required if you want the Smart Charger to limit maximum current. That's useful if you sometime use the charger with a small generator.

Thanks for the reply. Will the DIP switch settings for current limiting work without
the shunt present? I understand, but do not know, that the current limiting set on the DIP switches will be effective regardless of whether the shunt is connected or not. Thanks
