Oil pressure

Postby cat42 on Thu Feb 21, 2013 8:55 am

I have an Ample Power Genie that I bought from AP in 2006. Model #EL300-E-AR, serial #EL300-5W0351. Yesterday it was running along perfectly when the oil pressure started to quickly go down. I shut down the engine and checked the oil level which was full and no oil around the engine. I started it again and the pressure gauge went up and then quickly down to 0 and appeared that it would have shut itself down. Any idea what is happening?

It could be just a gauge issue. There is a low pressure switch that opens when oil pressure is lost. Measure across the contacts before starting and after with a voltmeter.

Something is keeping the engine from starting so I don't know how this can be done.

I'm responding as I have had similar issues and you will have to trace the wiring with a volt/ohmeter.

Check the Diode D1 - if it is open then the run relay cannot energize and operate the fuel shutoff (if you have this) or the throttle solenoid.

If the diode is good then focus on the run relay K-1 and see if the relay is closing by checking for +12vdc on K-1 contact C-2.

If you have +12vdc on C-2 then check to make sure that either the throttle solenoid (or fuel shutoff) is operating

WHich do you have - throttle solenoid or fixed throttle position and an electrically operated fuel shutoff?

Additionally, if the water temp switch is stuck in the open position or one of the wires is broken or corroded the engine will not start or run as the run relay will have lost its ground.

Mine has a fixed throttle position and an electronically operated fuel shutoff.

Does it crank, but not run? Not crank? Please be more specific about the behavior.

The engine will crank without any problem and starts to run but only for a few seconds and then shuts down by itself.

You can temporarily jumper around the oil pressure switch to see if that lets it run longer.

Is the water temperature switch closed?

We've determined that the wire connecting the temperature sensor broke right at the sensor so presume this is what is not letting the engine start. We are in Mexico where we cannot locate a replacement. Can we buy one from Ample Power? I can figure out how to get it to Mexico if you can sell me one our tell me where to buy it. Time is important because we really do not want to continue our cruising without a working generator.
