Flushing Thermo-Siphon Radiator and Temp Sensor

Postby PatM on Tue Mar 11, 2014 7:09 am

Has anyone flushed their radiator with a muratic acid mixture or anything else recommended?

My drain was stopped up so I removed the temp sensor, and gooey black syrup ran out, and then finally rusty, sooted water. I flushed with two gallons of almost boiling water until it was almost clear. I ran the engine, drained again, and got a little more rust and some black soot. Flushed again until clear.

I was wondering if their was something more industrial than water, yet was still safe for the engine that may clean any more residue. Not finding much on the internet except for the acid mixture that is used for marine refrigeration and marine air conditioning heat exchangers. However, that is to clear up any residue from salt water.

As well, tested temp sensor by putting on ohm meter, and got 4500 ohms at room temp. When 200 degree water was put in, reading remained the same. Is this proper testing, and is it safe to assume the sender is bad?

Engine Temperature Sender: 264 Ohms at 100F, (93C), 22 Ohms at 250F, (121C).

Flush with water only. Use 50/50 antifreeze and water after flushing.
