Over Cooling?

Postby Katmai on Fri Aug 07, 2015 3:50 am

Coulomb,

I bet you never thought to be asked that by me!? I am wondering if I am over cooling my Genie now? The temp gauge now shows just over 160F with max load of 130 amps, sea water at 63F and air temp at 72F. What temp is best for Genie?

Recently in very tropical Indonesian waters I had to turn the amps down to 100 amps and now back in wintertime Australian waters we turned the amps up to 130. I think 130 is maybe as high as I dare to go, it is down from the black smoke level.

Thanks
Eric

It's always a little hotter around the cylinder than where temperature is measured, so you're OK. A reading of 190F is ideal.

Without a thermostat, engine temperature depends on sea water temperature and the flow rate via the pump. In the cold waters of the USA NW, (50-55F) we suggest a lower rate pump. If you're using the Genie a lot, then you might consider that option.

Thanks Coulomb,

I will look into the option of reducing cooling water flow rate. Maybe a manually variable flow rate choke could be an option.
