V3 smart voltage regulator and hitachi 12 volt 55 amp altern

Postby Ehall on Sun Jan 10, 2016 6:47 am

I have a customer with a 11 year old 40 ft cat. He has just purchased this vessel. He has twin Yanmar 2gm20fc's I was called to the boat because both motors died after 6 hour run approximately 20 minutes of each other. I saw both motors had shredded the water pump belt. So no water flow. The previous owner told the new owner that you have to adjust the belts after every long run. And that the belts shred. (This is normal?) The previous owner installed the smart voltage regulator and balmar alternators. There is the problem. The balmar alternator does not align the same as the original hitachi 12volt 55 amp. It's off enough to destroy belts. Here is the problem. In order to work with the V3 it must have a no internal regulator on the alternators and the original hitachi has internal. But it also must align correctly. Throwing belts every 6-8 hours is unacceptable and dangerous. Is there any direction you help me with.

Removing the regulator in a Hitachi alternator is possible, but then you have an alternator good for about 30A continuous or it will fry the diodes.

There are lots of Yanmar engines fitted with the #4023-S alternator, and the correct metric pulley. Alignment is perfect. That's not to say that belt tension can be set and never looked at again, but shredding the belt will not happen - ever.

Use a Dayco TopCog belt for best performance.

Ok, so how do I go about determining the correct pulley. With out a month of trail and error. If other people have made the conversion with the yanmar 2gm20fc motor and put 75 amp alternators. What pulley or alternators are correct. Any help would be appreciated.

There are rumors that Yanmar engines can't use a 100+ Amp alternator - which is correct with bad alignment .

The Ample Power #4032-S alternator is the one to use. It comes with the right pulley for proper alignment,
