Temp sensor modify

I have the old next step.
I have moved the batteries and now the temp sensor wire is too short to get to the batteries.
Can I modify it and make it longer enough (3 1/2 meters)?

Use at least #16 AWG wire and the effect on temperature reading will be nil.

Which size do I need to buy ?
