Batt Volt Disconnect Error and Field Problem

Postby Sox on Mon May 31, 2010 8:37 am

On first Spring use after winterization neither engine/alternator was charging. Boat has two 2GM20 Yanmar's with their own alternators. System has a NEXT-12P with DAC-like unit providing inputs. System was factory installed and has worked fine for 6 years. NEXT shows 3-1 Batt Volt disconnect error code and 2-1 bulk charge. Both alternators charge normally for 30 seconds until the NEXT error code kicks on. Solar panel keeps house bank charged. No other electronics on the vessel are malfunctioning. Voltages are:
1- House Batt, 13.5 off, 13.5 Stb ig on, 13.5 port ig on, 13.5 stb eng on, 13.5 port eng on
2- Parallel, 0, 13.5, 13.5, 13.5, 13.5
3- On-Off, 0, 11.4, 11.4, 11.4, 11.4
4- Gnd, 0,0,0,0,0
5- B+, 13.5, 13.5, 13.5, 13.5, 13.5
6- Field, 5.3, 0,0,0,0
7- Alt Gnd, 0,0,0,0,0
9- Bat Volts, 13.5,13.5 13.5, 13.5, 13.5
10- T-, 0,0,0,0,0
11- T+, .2, 3, 3, 3, 3
Based upon other posts I'm guessing the NEXT field driver is bad and the NEXT needs repair or replacement? Please advise and suggest a way ahead. If replacement suggested, with what? Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Sox

This wouldn't appear to be a field circuit problem, but something in the battery sense circuits.

Most likely it's repairable.

I have encountered a similar problem, at least it sounds similar. Over the course of 5 years of owning my boat, which I purchased new with the Next Step 12 Volt Regulator as original equipment, I have been alerted on 3 or 4 occasions by the audible and visual alarm that there is a "Bat. Volt disconnect" problem. The voltage reading increases to well above 14.5 volts. When this error alarm has activated, I have shut down the engine, waited a few minutes, and restarted the engine. Upon restart, everything returns to normal with battery voltage at 14.1 or so. Any thoughts as to my situation? Alec

An intermittent problem like this sounds more like an external circuit problem. Even a very little corrosion on the fuse or fuse holder in the battery sense line can create symptoms like this.
