An inline fuse would be a good idea there, but it seems strange that it would be buried in a wiring harness.

Maybe abandon that wire and run a new one.

I am back in internet land and in Barcelona for the winter.
Rather than re-wiring the regulator toggle switch on the instrument panel, I have run 12v straight to the on/off terminal on the SAR with a switch. Readings on on/off have, of course, returned to battery level while readings on the field wire have also returned (for column B) but are more than the 1.5v below battery voltage that the troubleshooting guide allows. More like 10.2 when battery voltage is 12.8.
I ran the genie with the above repairs in order to see whether the genset returned to the way it was operating prior to my causing sparks to fly. It did return to its previous problem state and I will start a new problem string to address this problem.
Please, however, comment on my solution of running 12v straight to the on/off and to why the field v is lower than wished.

Once the batteries reach the absorption setpoint, the field voltage will decline since the full output of the alternator is not needed.
