The common denominator for most power systems is the battery bank. Without careful monitoring, and even more careful charging, the battery bank will not survive very long. This applies whether the battery is installed in an ocean buoy, a cruising sailboat, or a remote telecom site.

Likewise, to reduce fuel consumption, a fast full charge is desirable in most applications. That requires multi-step, temperature compensated methods to avoid damaging the batteries.

The main differences between power systems for sailing vessels and stationary sites are the method of cooling the engine, and the level of automation required. Manually starting an engine to recharge is acceptable in many vessels, but not so for most remote sites. In the later case, automatic engine start/stop is necessary, and to achieve long battery life, the start/stop controller needs to be more than a simple voltage sensor.
